Kalimba Center for the Arts
The location for this brief idea to create a center for the arts near the Mexican Border happened because Jonathan and
Elizabeth Glasier owned this large multi-use building. A large 4000sq ft section became available and Jonathan had
wanted to recreate the Sonic Arts format that he had done previously in the late 80s and early 90s, Sonic Arts Gallery I and in the Late 90’s and early 2000s, Sonic Arts Gallery II. Jonathan and Elizabeth purchased the 36K sq ft building in 2003. There are five businesses in the building and when a 4000 sq ft space became available, they thought that it would be a good place to do cross cultural arts presentations.
After two successful microtonal festivals in late 2015 and early 2016, we got the word from the city of San Diego that the building was in the wrong place and not zoned for an art center. The city would not budge, so we gave up the idea. As of 2024 we still own the building but have no presence there. Shortly after the demise of Kalimba, Jonathan did move to another smaller space in the building for a workshop, music studio and Sonic Arts crystal business which was folded from Sonic Arts on 2961 Beech Street at the end of 2019. Then he left the 30th Street Building 2023 again because the space was needed for commercial use. Presently Jonathan has confined his activities to two owned residences, one in the Golden hill Area and the other in Ocean Beach Area of San Diego.
